Welcome to JUPYTER at the IGI

Journal for Undergraduates and Professional Young Technicians Enjoying Research

Overview

JUPYTER is a journal club for undergraduate researchers and technicians at the Innovative Genomics Institute (IGI). It was launched in November 2023 to reinstate the previous undergraduate CRISPR journal club and provide new opportunities for students and technicians.

The journal club is designed to create a welcoming space and community for budding scientists in the early stages of their professional careers. Members will learn about seminal and latest scientific literature, how to read and analyze a paper, and present scientific findings. Reading and critically analyzing primary scientific literature is an important skill for any scientist. Working through these papers will expose you to new vocabulary, figures, and protocols common in the molecular biology and genetic field. After reading and dissecting these papers, you’ll be able to understand the science and effectively dissect scientific literature in the future.

In addition, we plan to organize documentary viewings and host career panels and fireside chats to break up the scientific material and encourage more interactive learning and discussion. There will be an end of year symposium (hosted in collaboration with the MCB Undergraduate Students Association on-campus) in the Spring where attendees will get the chance to present their research as a poster or a speaker presentation. The symposium is a great opportunity to network with other trainees and invited scientists and speakers.

Details

JUPYTER will return for the 2024-2025 academic year. If you’re an undergraduate researcher or technician at the IGI, fill out this interest form. Contact annav.2000@berkeley.edu or abbywang@berkeley.edu for more information or questions!

Previously, our meetings were held on Friday from 4–5 pm at the Innovative Genomics Institute Building but we will survey interested members to find a time and day that works best for everyone.

NOTE: We strive to make our events accessible and inclusive. Please mention any disability accommodation requests in your email.
