In the last decade, there have been significant advancements in research, development, and regulatory policy for genetically engineered microorganisms (GEMs).
Along with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and Phytobiomes Alliance, we organized a workshop on GEMs, entitled "The Future of Microbial Biotechnology: From Research to Regulation." Held virtually on February 2 and 3, 2022, participants heard from public and private-sector developers about their cutting-edge research and U.S. government officials discussed how they review GEM applications.
