Doudna and Charpentier Receive 2016 L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women In Science Award
IGI Executive Director Jennifer Doudna has been named the North American laureate of the 2016 L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women In Science Awards. She and European laureate, Emmanuelle Charpentier, are being recognized for their development of CRISPR-Cas9 technology, a genetic editing tool that allows scientist to rewrite genetic code, “opening tremendous new possibilities for treating, even curing, diseases.” The awards ceremony was held today in Paris.

Other laureates of the 2016 award are Quarraisha Abdool Karim (representing Africa and the Arab States), for her contribution to the prevention and treatment of HIV and associated infections and greatly improving the quality of life of women in Africa; Hualan Chen (representing Asia/Pacific), for her research into the biology of the bird flu virus that is leading to the development and use of an effective vaccine; and Andrea Gamarnik (representing Latin America), for her discoveries on how mosquito-borne viruses reproduce and cause Dengue Fever and other human diseases.
