In agriculture, we face the great quandary of feeding a growing population while simultaneously addressing the climate catastrophe. This unprecedented challenge requires innovative and compelling new approaches to science advocacy, especially as the current political and media landscape in many countries is one where truths are blurred by fake news, scientific consensuses are selectively upheld, and future funding for scientific research seems uncertain. Now, more than ever, we need to move beyond deficit models of science communication and adopt active roles as science advocates. In this talk, I will share examples of how the Cornell Alliance for Science is empowering champions who are effectively advocating for science-informed policy-making to ensure that misconstrued genomic tools, such as genetic engineering and genome editing, can be used to help solve the grand problems we face today. I will share one of our newest approaches for successfully engaging the public on food and genomics.
