IGI Outlines a Responsible Course Forward for Genomic Editing
In January 2015, the IGI convened a small group of prominent researchers and thought-leaders in the fields of genome editing, bioethics, and law to discuss current issues and revelations in the field of genome engineering. A summary of the group’s recommendations was published in March 2015 in the journal Science.
The complete report can be read here: A prudent path forward for genomic engineering and germline gene modification.
The authors make some very clear recommendations about how best to understand and communicate about the risks and rewards of this important new technology in order to initiate the “fascinating and challenging discussions” that will “optimize the decisions society will make at the advent of a new era in biology and genetics.”
